CUSTOM MTB FRAME
A PROJECT EXPLORING A BESPOKE PURCHASING EXPERIENCE WITHIN THE MOUNTAIN BIKING INDUSTRY
The cycling industry is a highly saturated market with an endless number of brands competing to produce the fastest, most lightweight and profitable designs. Whilst many brands offer a range of suspension systems and materials, what’s available from each manufacturer is relatively similar and mass produced. An area of the industry which I believe is yet to be fully explored, particularly within the mountain bike industry, is a custom bike experience that offers customers a behind the scenes insight into the design of their frame.
I believe there is an evident trend within today's society to understand the story behind the products you buy and the biking industry is no different. Taking that time to dive into the details behind the production of a frame is something that I believe would massively interest cyclists but it would also give them better confidence and a solid understanding of the bike beneath them.
The frame shown to the left is a project that I’ve been working on for 6 months now and is something that I am currently looking to prototype. The frame features a 2 bar linkage design which, in my opinion, is a relatively straight forward suspension configuration hence catering to the idea of understanding the design. The custom nature of the design comes from the use of custom linkage designs and frame sizes. Using linkage X3 I was able to test the progressiveness of the set-up to then design a range of linkages accordingly. By having this selection of linkages and frame size options, you can provide customers with a frame that matches not just their physical characteristics but also their riding style.
